ABOUT THE CALLAWAY CENTRE
|

The Callaway Centre is an international research centre based
in the School of Music at The University of Western Australia.
For many years it published quality academic books in music and
music education. Its current focus is on the Centre's archival
collections, research projects on music in everyday life, music
education, ethnomusicology and Australian music.
The Centre’s Archive houses several research collections
of international significance, including the papers of Eileen
Joyce, John Blacking and Irene Kohler. The nucleus of the
Centre's holdings is the comprehensive and unique collection of
music education materials which include the correspondence,
publications and professional library of Emeritus Professor Sir
Frank Callaway. These materials were presented to the University
on his retirement in 1984.
The Centre’s activities include the highly regarded
Callaway Lecture held annually and
numerous recitals arranged by the School of Music in the
impressive Callaway Auditorium.
In 2000, the UWA School of Music named its professorial chair
the Callaway/Tunley Chair of
Music in honour of Sir Frank Callaway, the Foundation
Professor of the School of Music and Emeritus Professor David
Tunley. This position was filled in 2006 by Professor Jane
Davidson, the current Director of the Centre.
